Sarah Jane (Utter) Highfill Morehead

Sarah Jane Utter married Robert Highfill on August 21, 1845 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

In 1850, Sarah and Robert lived in Vermillion Township, Vermillion County. In the census, she was reported as 21 years old born in Ohio. Her husband was age 31 and born in Kentucky. They had two children, Mahala J, age 3, and John R, age 1, born in Indiana.

She married Samuel Morehead on October 5, 1857 also in Vermillion County.

In 1860, she and Samuel were still in Vermillion Township. The census indicated that the post office was at Newport. The family was listed as follows:

Sarah Morehead, age 33, born Ohio
Mahala J. Highfill, age 14, born Ohio
John R. Highfill, age 10, born Ohio
Mary L. Highfill, age 8, born Indiana
Sarah A. Highfill, age 6, born Indiana
Shannon A. Highfill, age 2, born Indiana

Sarah's first two children were born in Indiana according to the 1850 census. Also living with them was a laborer name Grauften Sheomaker (as spelled in the record).

In 1870, the family was still in Newport. All of the children were reported as born in Indiana while it showed that Sarah and Samuel were born in Ohio. Samuel was reported as age 50 and Sarah as 46. They had 3 children of their own: Aquila (boy), age 12; William, age 9; and Leota, age 8. The Highfill children still living at home were Mahala, who was recorded as Belle, Mary L. and Sarah, who was recorded as Ann. Also living with them was a 4 year old name Effa Headington.

Her obituary from the September 26, 1872 Newport Hoosier State newspaper:

Mrs. Sarah Morehead, wife of Samuel Morehead, residing one mile west of here, died near 6 o'clock, on last Thursday morning after a lingering illness of 2 or 3 months. She was 44 years old last December, and was a member of the M.E. Church of this place.
