STROKE FATAL TO LOCAL WOMAN, 78 - MRS. ALLIE MATTINGLY SUCCUMBS AT HOME WEDNESDAY - Funeral services for Mrs. Allie Mattingly, 78, widow of Thomas E. Mattingly, will be conducted this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Augustine's Church and burial will be by the side of her husband in St. Charles Cemetery at St. Mary. Pallbearers will be Alton Bradshaw, James Bradshaw, Mark Bradshaw, Gerald Leake, William Abell and Chester Abell. Mrs. Mattingly died at 3:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at her home on Chandler Street, where she had suffered a stroke nine days before. Prior to her last illness, she had been as well as usual. For years a victim of diabetes, she had submitted to the amputation of both legs, one in June, 1945 and the other on April 26, 1946. She had made a remarkable recovery and by the use of a wheel chair, which she had learned to get into and out of herself, was able to be up and about and even to visit in the neighborhood and to make occasional trips to the business section. The only child of Charles and Dorothy Hamilton Mattingly, she was born on a farm on the St. Rose Pike. At an early age she was orphaned, losing her mother when eight months old and her father when she was four. She was reared by her Grandmother Hamilton, now long deceased. Her marriage to the late Mr. Mattingly was solemnized at St. Rose fifty-six years ago and they made their home on a farm in the county, where all of their twelve children were born. They moved to Lebanon about thirty-one years ago and her husband operated a mill and store on Spalding Avenue. He preceded her to the grave by twenty years. A lifelong member of the Catholic Church, Mrs. Mattingly was a faithful attendant as long as her health permitted. Though long a sufferer, she remained cheerful till the last and her uncomplaining spirit was an inspiration to her friends. She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society and formerly was active in the Altar Society. In addition to her own family, she reared from infancy, a granddaughter, Patricia Leake. Six children survive. They are W. Robert Mattingly, Charles T. Mattingly, Mrs. Alton Bradshaw and Mrs. Joe Leake, all of this city and community; Sister Thomasina of the Ursuline Order, who is now principal of St. Martin's School at Owensboro, and Mrs. Hood Borders of Louisville. Two daughters, Mrs. Jimmie Leake and Mrs. Susie Tipton, are deceased, and four other children, one a twin sister of Sister Thomasina, died in infancy. She leaves twenty-eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The remains were taken to the Bosley Funeral Home and, after preparations for burial, were returned to her late residence until the funeral hour.

Buried, 1/31/1947, in St. Charles Cemetery, St. Mary, Ky; Section B; Card 19; # 328. The book about St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery by Gerald Thompson, states that her marker has the inscription: "Allie Mattingly b. 9-08-1868 - d. 1-29-1947."
