When Wisconsin became a state in 1848, the land that was given to soldiers in lieu of pay was auctioned off by the federal government. Jonathan's father, Philip Haessly, came to Wisconsin from Ohio and bought 5 half sections for about $200.00 apiece. As the children married in Ohio and came to Wisconsin, he sold each one a piece for $300.00. Jonathan and his wife Nancy Fitzpatrick Haessly along with his brother Jacob and his wife Sarah Fitzpatrick Haessly were the first to come in 1851. Nancy and Sarah were sisters and the two families settled on adjoining farms in Ashford Twp in Fond du Lac Co.(family history compiled by Peggy Grass)
Jonathan is listed as one of the First Parishioners of St Matthew's Parish and is one of the original cemetery lot owners at St Matthew's Cemetery.
