David Gunnells, 94, of Blackville, SC entered eternal rest on October 25, 2023. David was born to parents Charles Shelly and Lillie Maxcey Gunnells on November 26, 1928, in Govan, SC. David graduated from Bamberg High School on May 26, 1947, and served in the United States Navy from 1948 through 1951.

David began his career as an insurance salesman. He retired from Admiral/Rheem in Williston, SC. David coached youth sports, umpired church softball games, performed in community theater, and worked at local festivals on a food truck. David enjoyed watching sports on TV, going to Friday night football games when able, and playing golf with his sons. His favorite quotes were "Fine as wine and twice as sweet," "Education is a possession of which man cannot be robbed," and "God loves you and I love you." He is remembered for serving as President of the Civic Club, giving historical tours in the town of Blackville, teaching Sunday school, serving as a Deacon at Double Pond Baptist Church, reading the Holy Bible daily, praying passionately and loving deeply. David often professed his love and devotion to his wife of 46 years, and he enjoyed their vacations at Myrtle Beach, SC, trips with the Young at Heart group with FBC Barnwell, and eating in Neeses several times a week, and eating ice cream.

David is survived by his loving wife Peggy Huggins Gunnells, and children Dean (Ruth ) Gunnells, of Barnwell, SC, Perry (Bridgitte) Gunnells of Flagler Beach, FL, Belinda Hartzog Hutchens of Pelion, Timothy (Cat) Hartzog, of Orangeburg, SC, and Angel Gunnells Thompson, of Gaston, SC. Survived by grandchildren Shannon McCormack (Jamie), Kimberly Sanders (Rex), Ryan Gunnells, Catherine Gunnells, David Van Buren (Kearstin), CJ Hutchens, Michael Hutchens, Lindsey Smith, Jose' Hernandez, Victoria Hernandez, Jonathan Gunnells, Omar Montero, Caleb Thompson, Justin Thompson, Austin Thompson, Aaron Thompson and 18 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents, siblings: Frank, Gene, Jim, G.C., Mary Blackman, Grace Altman, Sara Crook, and Florine Dodds, first spouse Rebie M. Scoggins Gunnells, children: David A. Gunnells, Scotty Hartzog, Brian Gunnells, and Gwetholyn Gunnells Hernandez, and great-grandson Sebastian Hutchens.

A visitation will be held Saturday, October 28th at 1:00 PM at Double Pond Baptist Church, with funeral services to follow at 2:00 PM. Graveside with military honors will be held after the funeral in the Double Pond Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Andy Sandifer will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Barnwell County Animal Shelter.
