Sara Maxcey Crook, 91, of North Charleston, widow of Harlan David Crook, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at White Oak Manor in North Charleston. Friends and family may call at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville on Friday, August 22, 2014 11:30 AM until Hour of Service. Funeral Services will begin at 1 o'clock PM. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in North Charleston. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Teleios Roma Gypsy Ministry in Romania, Teleios Ministry, 28 Eula Street, Greenville, SC 29609, teleiosministry.org. Sara was born on September 10, 1922 in Govan, SC where she was raised on a farm. She was the daughter of the late Charles Shelly and Lillie Maxcey Gunnells. She attended Denmark High School and graduated in 1939. After marrying Harlan David Crook of Ellisville, MS in 1941, they raised a daughter and three sons. For many years while raising her children she worked part-time as a church secretary. In 1963 she began working in the Security Office of the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek and retired as a Security Officer Supervisor in 1983. She was a member of Summerville Baptist Church and when active prior to her declining health and advancing age, she taught Sunday school classes. She was active in the Women's Missionary Union and had also joined in a mission trip to Brazil. She also served as an officer in the Jessamine Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. After retirement and the death of her husband, while living in Simpsonville, SC, she worked seasonally at Greenville Technical College bookstore and also volunteered at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt whose greatest joys came from serving her Lord and being with family, friends and her church fellowship. She also found satisfaction in cooking and sharing a special dish, as well as keeping a beautiful yard and flower garden. Surviving are: one daughter, Lillian Ann Castleberry of Jonesboro, GA; two sons: Joseph "Joe" Edward Crook (Cindy) of North Charleston and Frank Allan Crook (Jan) of Rockwood, TN; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Crook of Ft. Mill, SC; one brother: David Gunnells of Blackville, SC; one sister: Mattie "Florine" Dodds of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harlan, her son Alfred Carl Crook; her parents, Charles Shelly and Lillie Maxcey Gunnells, and brothers, George "GC" Cooper Gunnells, James "Jim" Shelly Gunnells, Williard "Gene" Eugene Gunnells and Francis "Frank" Oliver Gunnells; sisters: Mary Magdalene Blackman and Grace Altman.
