Ned Curtiss, for eight years an employee as engineer at the Mac-Sim Bar Paper Co plant in Otsego, lost his life in the power house of the plant Tuesday night. The low pressure boiler of the 750 K. W. turbine exploded and a piece of boiler casting about 2 feet square was blown from the boiler. He was standing at the side of the boiler when it let loose. One leg was crushed, his body pierced and his head cut.

Ned was born October 20, 1882 in Allegan County near Dunningville to Cynthia (nee Beech) and Edward Curtiss. He had four older brothers - Edwin born 1873, Henry born 1876, John born 1877. and James born 1879. At one and a half years old, Ned's mother died and from that time until manhood, he was cared for by John and Caroline Skinner.

June 14, 1906 he married Julia Ann Bedunah, daughter of Clarissa (nee Armstrong) and Moses Bedunah. They had five children - Leonard born 1907, Clarissa (Clara) born 1909, Ned Jr. born 1911, Arthur born 1912, and May (always called June) born 1915. Julia passed away August 5, 1915 shortly after May/June was born. Ned tried the best he could to keep his family together, but after he died they were left as orphans. Leonard, Clara, and Ned lived with a grandmother or stepmother part of the time. Art and June were sent to Mooseheart Orphanage.

Just one year before his death, on September 6, 1923, Ned was united in marriage to Louise (nee Odenbrecht) Sherman, who brought two sons to the marriage.

Some of this is recorded on Microfilm at the Otsego MI Public Library taken from the Otsego MI Union dated September 11, 1924.
