JOHN BURNETT FUNERAL SUNDAY

John Burnett, 82, Macclemiy, died in a Jacksonville hospital last Friday morning following several weeks illness.

A native of Echols County, Ga., Mr, Burnett moved to Columbia County with his parents when he was 10 years of age, on what was then known as the Burnett place at Soakum. His parents were the late John and Jane Burnett.

He married Mittie Davis, daughter of the late Noah and Emily Davis of Baker County and lived on his farm north of Sanderson from 1909 to 1936, when he sold to Claude Rhoden of Glen. St. Mary, and moved to Sanderson, where he lived until 1954, when he Moved to Macclenny.

Mr. Burnett was one of Baker County's outstanding citizens, and a naval stores operator, farmer, livestock owner and operator of a cotton gin at Sanderson for a number of years. He served with distinction as a member of the Board of County Commissioners, Member of the School Board, and was in measure responsible for the consolidation of a number of County schools, and was a trustee of the Sanderson School District for a number of years. He was an active member for many years of Sanderson Lodge F.&A.M. Mr. Burnett was very outspoken in his convictions and his advice was often sought on public and political matters. It was the privilege of the editor of The Press to number John Burnett as one of our best friends and often sought his advice on public matters of County wide interest.

Mr. Burnett is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mittie Burnett, Macclenny, five sons, N.J. Burnett, Jacksonville; L.E. Burnett, Miami; Virgil Burnett, Tampa; C. M. Burnett, Raiford & J.A. Burnett, Macclenny; two daughters, Mrs. Mazie Drawdy, Macclenny; Mrs. Aline Summers, Miami; three sisters; Mrs. Janie Alderman and Miss Winnie Burnett, Lake Butler; Mrs. Dollie Broward, Jacksonville: One brother, Jim Burnett, Bartow; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the graveside at Cedar Creek Cemetery Sunday afternoon, 6th at 1 p.m; Elders J.E. McCormick and M.M. Fivash officiating. Pallbearers were C.C. Thompson, Lonnie Dobson, Randall Davis, Jim Davis, S.O. Mann, W.D. Bryan. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of John M. Brinkly, Mortician, Maccclenny.
