JOHN M. BRINKLEY, 67, for three decades the owner of a funeral home here that bore his name, died in his sleep Sunday morning after a lengthy bout with cancer.

He was buried in Jacksonville's Evergreen Cemetery Wednesday following a service at First Baptist Church in Macclenny.

Brinkley was a Savannah native but lived in Florida most of his life, mostly in the Macclenny­/Jacksonville areas. He moved to Jacksonville as a young man and worked at the former Key-McCabe. Funeral Home for a decade until 1949, when he started his own business here. At the time, Baker County was without a funeral home. In 1958 Brinkley opened the attractive colonial style building on US 90 east he occupied until his death. For a short period, he also owned a funeral home in Jacksonville's Riverside section.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of both state and national funeral directors associations, the Masons, Shriners and other organizations.

He is survived by wife June, daughter Mrs. Thomas Baldauff of Deland and son John Mark, Jr.

A native of Savannah, Mr. Brinkley had lived In Florida most of his life. He moved to Jacksonville from Tampa in 1939 and for ten years was associated with the former Key McCabe Funeral Home in Jacksonville. In 1949, he started a funeral home business in Baker County.

Mr. Brinkley was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Florida Funeral Directors Association, a member and past Worthy Patron of the Leona Knabb #212 OES; past Worshipful Master of Dawkins Lodge #60 F&AM; honorary Life Member of the Sanderson Lodge #122; a member of the Baker County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Bodies and Morocco Temple. He was a veteran of the US Navy, and served In the Phillipines during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post 9717.

He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. June T. Brinkley; son John Mark Brinkley, Jr.; daughter, Mrs. Thomas R. Baidauff of Deland; and sister Mrs. Elise Beasley of Statesboro, Ga.
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the First Baptist Church of Macclenny at 11:00 a.m., with the Revs. O.E. Boals, Allen R. Carter, C. Earl Cooper and Father Michael Kelly officiating.

Pallbearers were: Joey Dobson, Maines Finley, E. Ed Yarbrough, Raymond Phillips, Berry Rhoden, Joe Newmans, Gary Fraser and Herbert Tanner.

Entombment was in the family room, Garden Cloister of Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family gratefully declines flowers, and instead requests memorials to the building fund at First Baptist Church in Macclenny.

Arrangements at Mr. Brinkley's Funeral Home were under the direction of licensed funeral directors Doyle M. Archer of Lake Butler, J.B. Daniels of Live Oak, John H. Heard of Fernandina Beach and Edgar Johnson of Palatka.
