Death of Mrs. John Hill
Amanda Marshall was born in Tennessee April 12, 1846, and died at her home two miles north of this city Sunday night May 17, 1903, aged 57 years one month and six days.
When she was quite a small child her parents moved to Wayne county Illinois. She was twice married. Her first husband was killed in the civil war. She was married to John G. Hill March 14, 1867 in Wayne county Illinois, and came from there to Kansas with her husband in 1877. For a number of years she was landlady of the Hill hotel in this city but on account of her failing health they leased their hotel and moved out to their country home where she died.
Five children survive her, Mrs. Wm. Flowers, Mrs. Joe Flowers, Mrs. John Allen, Mrs. Anderson Legg and Mrs. Wm. Schooler, all living in this country.
The funeral was held at the home Tuesday conducted by W.A. McCroskey. Funeral sermon and burial service by Rev. R. Arthur, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city.
The funeral was among the largest ever conducted at this place. Nearly 109 teams were driven to the home and about 70 teams formed the procession which followed the remains to the new cemetery where interment was made.
[Note: Amanda was the daughter of John Guthrie Marshall and Martha Ann Whitson. She was first married to Andrew Jackson Shehorn who died in 1864 in the Civil War. They had two daughters, Martha and Melvina. She then married John G. Hill. They had three daughters, Virginia "Belle", Susan and Sarah Viola.]
