The son of Henry & Mary (Rohrbaugh) Bailey, he married Sarah Markel ca. 1859 and fathered Samuel (b. @1859), William (b. 06/10/61 - death certificate claims 1863), Cornelius (b. @1863), Charles Wesley (b. 09/09/67), Emma Jane & Louisa Jane (b. 10/27/68), Martha Jane (b. 09/21/72), Ann Mariah (b. 01/16/74), Jacob Meriden (b. 03/09/75), Mary Ann (b. 07/03/76), Lily (b. 09/??/79), Curtis (b. 10/15/81 - death certificate names Samuel as his father), and Annie (b. 03/??/82). In 1860, he was living with and/or working for blacksmith George Markle in Codorus Township but Sarah is not listed with him in that census.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Harrisburg March 22, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. E, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. His brother Samuel served in the same company.


He died at his home in unincorporated Larue following a stroke.
