Son of WILLIAM GLUYAS [1790-1858], Cornwall miner, and MARY ANN BARNETT [1800-1869], Thomas was born in Carharrack, Gwennap; he was the last born of their 12 children. Like his father and many of his siblings, Thomas was working in the Cornwall mines from a young age. When the Cornwall mining industry went into a deep decline mid 19th century, Thomas moved north to find work in the coal mines of Durham, England.
On 12 October 1867 Thomas Gluyas married JANE SUTTON in Kelloe, Durham and they had 3 children before Thomas was accidently killed in a mining accident at Binchester colliery at Bishop Auckland in Durham in 1874 when he was aged 26 years.
