Son of WILLIAM GLUYAS and MARY ANN BARNETT of Gwennap, Cornwall, Oliver was the 6th of their 12 children. His father was a miner and so was William. Early 1851 he was a silver/lead miner at Herodsfoot near Liskeard in SE Cornwall, then he went, with one of his brothers, to try his luck on the American goldfields for a short time. By late 1853 he was at the Ballarat goldfields in Victoria, in time to participate in the Eureka Stockade battle the following year.
By 1857 Oliver had returned to Cornwall where he married MARTHA HARRIS at Liskeard in June that year.
Oliver and his new wife were back at the Ballarat goldfields of Victoria by January 1859; their 3 children were born at the nearby Wardy Yallock and Linton districts. By 1879 Oliver was working at the Moonta mines in South Australia, then by 1886 he had followed some of his brothers to the hugely successful mining district of Broken Hill in New South Wales where he died in 1904, aged 74 years. His wife Martha died in 1923.
