H.C. MELTON

H. C. (Clay) Melton, a pioneer of Fisher County, died Thursday, September 2, 1965 at 9:30 a.m. in Wilkerson Clinic Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 3 p. m. Friday at the Church of Christ with Minister Robert Bankhead, assisted by Rev. E. L. Yeats, officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery under direction of Weathersbee Funeral Home.

Mr. Melton was born on January 15, 1871, in Union Parish, Louisiana to Perry and Eliza Kinard Melton. As a young man, Clay and his brother, Morgan Melton , came to Texas and settled in Palo Pinto, County, Texas. There he met and married Miss Annie Belle Stringer on October 25, 1897. In the summer of 1907 the brothers scouted Texas and what was then Oklahoma Indian Territory looking for land to homestead. The flat land area of Fisher County appealed to them , so they purchased land about a mile west of Roby. Clay moved his family to Fisher County in 1907. Throughout his life, Clay continued buying the rich farm land in the area. He farmed his extensive holdings west of Roby until his health forced retirement.

He was preceded in death by son, Guy Melton, and by his beloved wife of 60 years, Annie Melton. Until funeral hour, the body will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Campbell where he has lived for the past ten years. In honor of their grandfather, his grandsons, Edward Clay Feagan, M.O. Campbell, Jimmy Melton, Don Bolton, Richard Melton, J. Neal McGinnis, Jack Smith, Don Bruner, and Ramon Moore served as pallbearers.

He will be deeply missed by his two sons, Dick Melton and Arlon Melton of Roby; five daughters, Fila Campbell, Eula Feagan, Ola McGinnis, Ora Bennett of Roby and Claudean Piper of Dallas; a brother, Perry Melton of Dallas; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. All of which cherish his memory and the legacy "Dad" left with us.
