Fila Melton Campbell

Mrs. Fila Campbell, 88, longtime Roby resident, died at 5 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, 1986 at the Fisher County Hospital. Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ in Roby with her nephew, Richard Melton of Abilene, and Wardell Halliburton, minister of the Roby Church of Christ officiating. Burial followed in Roby Cemetery, under the direction of Weathersbee Funeral Home.
Born on October 9, 1898 in Fox Hollow Community in Palo Pinto County, Texas, her parents, the late Henry Clay and Annie Melton, moved to Fisher County in 1907. She married Preston Campbell on December 26, 1921 in Rotan. He preceded her in death on February 15, 1978. Mrs. Campbell loved her life as a Christian, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, and a friend. The Campbell home, warm and welcoming, became the meeting place for many Melton family celebrations throughout the years. A faithful member of the Roby Church of Christ for 60 plus years, she also taught the Ladies Bible Class for almost as many years. A teacher at heart, Mrs. Campbell taught school in Center, Longworth, and Roby before taking a position as a postal employee at the Roby Post Office. She touched the lives of many people in Roby with her willingness to serve. The Golden Rule was her motto.
Along with her service to the church, Mrs. Campbell was also active in many civic organizations such as the Home Demonstration Club, the Fisher County Historical Society, and the Roby Cemetery Association. She was recognized as the Roby's Citizen of the Year in October 1986, a timely honor that delighted the unassuming Fila Campbell.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband; her parents; two brothers, Guy Melton in 1907 and Arlon Melton in 1981; two sisters, Claudean Piper in 1969 and Eula Feagan in 1984.
Mrs. Campbell will be missed and her memory cherished by her son, Morris Owen "M.O." Campbell of the Woodlands; one brother, Dick Melton of Roby; two sisters, Ola McGinnis and Ora Bennett both of Roby; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
