Sarah Jane Brant married first to John Brackett (1868) and they had one child, a son, Edgar Lacey Brackett. It was reported that John Brackett died (1869) and Sarah married 2nd to John James (1870)and they had several children. Sarah Powell is buried in the Brackett family plot near her son Edgar. She was the daughter of Lacey and Angeline (Brown) Brant. In 1880 this family was living in Keeler, Van Buren County Michigan as the John James family. In 1885 they were living in Lac Qui Parle County Minnesota as the John Powell family. It appears between 1880 and 1885 Sarah remarried to John Powell.

Sarah's obituary appeared in the Niles Daily Star on 30 Jul 1930 and reads:

"Galien Pioneer Dies

Mrs. Sarah Powell, 80, a pioneer of Berrien County died last evening at the home of her son William Powell with who she had made her home in Galien. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Edward Phillips, Mrs. Anthony Slocum and William Powell of Galien, Mrs. Eva Hall of Buchanan, Madison Powell of Detroit, and Edward Brackett of New Troy. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon in the Christian Church, Buchanan. Burial will be in the New Troy Cemetery."

*Edward Brackett should have been listed as Edgar Brackett. He often went by Ed and some assumed his name was Edward instead of Edgar. She was living with her son Tim Powell at this time and not William Powell.

The Berrien County Record carried an obituary for Sarah (Brant) Powell on 07 Aug 1930 and it reads: “Mrs. Sarah Jane Powell, daughter of Lacy and Angeline Brant, was born in the state of Illinois, June 21, 1850. She was united in marriage to J. W. Powell at Michigan City, Ind. about 58 years ago. To this union there were born eight children, five sons and three daughters. She is a member of the Church of Christ, having confessed her faith in Him and obeying Him in the ordinance of baptism in January of 1926. The close of this earthly life came at the home of her son, Timothy Powell, near Galien on Tuesday, July 29, 1930 at 9:40 o’clock; her age being 80 years, 1 month and 8 days. There are left to mourn her departure, three sons, Ed. L. Brackett of New Troy; Madison Powell of Plymouth; Timothy Powell of Galien; three daughters, Mrs. Phoebe Ann Hall of Buchanan, Mrs. Nora Phillips and Mrs. Allie Slocum of Galien; two brothers, William Brant of Livingston, Mich., and Bert Brant of Bangor. Mich.; seventeen grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband J. W. Powell, and two sons, William and John. For the past forty years she has been resident of Buchanan and vicinity, where she has been surrounded by a large company of friends who join the loved ones in their sorrow. The funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Jesse L. Griffith, at the Church of Christ, Thursday, July 31st, at 3 p.m. Burial was made at New Troy.”

A family story tells that John Brackett's family did not approve of this marriage and that John left soon after the marriage to work on the railroad. When Sarah's family contacted John's family about the birth of his son they were told that John had died in a railroad accident. I believe he was told that Sarah and their child had died during childbirth. Both Sarah and John went on to remarry in 1870. I draw this conclusion from years of research and consulting countless documents. The only John Brackett who was born in Canada West in the correct time period is John B. Brackett son of Jonathan and Mary (Fancher) Brackett of Euphemia Township, Ontario Canada.

DNA testing proves my relationship with descendants of both John B. Brackett and his brother Martin Brackett. Martin moved on to British Columbia, Canada.
