After many years of research and reviewing countless documents I firmly believe that John B. Brackett is one in the same as the John Brackett who married Sarah Jane Brant in 1868 in Berrien County, Michigan. Our family story is that his family did not approve of this marriage and shortly after they married John went to work on the railroads. When his family was notified that Sarah had given birth they were told he had died in a railroad accident. The son born was Edgar L. Brackett. The only John Brackett born in the correct time period who was born in : "Canada West" that I have located is this John B. Brackett. Sarah went on to remarry in 1870. I believe John was told that Sarah and the child had died during childbirth. John went on to remarry also in 1870.
April 29, 2017: Genetic testing (DNA) of myself and a relative of Martin Brackett of British Columbia, Canada has shown that I am directly related to this descendant of Martin Brackett. Martin Brackett was the brother of John B. Brackett and they were the sons of Jonathan Brackett of Euphemia Township, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. Jonathan Brackett was the son of Christopher Brackett of Bennington, Vermont. This genetic testing also links us to John Brockett of New Haven, Connecticut, the immigrant ancestor.
What is exciting about this genetic connection is that it proves I am descended from Martin Brackett’s brother John B. Brackett. This negates the family story that Edgar Brackett’s father, John Brackett, died in 1869. John B. Brackett, brother of Martin Brackett lived out his life in Michigan, married twice more and raised a family there. As far as can be determined, John Brackett never knew his son Edgar Brackett.
