Jeremiah Murray Honored Monday At Funeral Rites

ASHLEY -- Funeral services for Jeremiah Hatch Murray Jr., 79, was held Monday at Maeser Ward with Bishop Leo Hacking conducting. Mr. Hatch died February 6, at Salt Lake City of a lingering illness.

Prayer at the home was by William Bodily. A mixed quartet consisting of Oral and Louella Merkley, Clyde Bartlett and Les Thacker sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer." They were accompanied by Margaret Roberts. Invocation was offered by Dee Jenkins.

Remarks were made by Bishop Hacking, A vocal solo, "End of a Perfect Day," was sung by Mrs. John Jorgensen accompanied by Mrs. Stagg. Speakers were Hugh W. Colton and Harvey McKee followed by a vocal solo, "Old Rugged Cross," by Corwin Snow, accompanied by Naomi Dudley.

The quartet also sang, "Jesus Lover of my Soul," and the benediction was by Ed Colton.

Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery with Alma Preece dedicating the grave.

Pallbearers were Lyle Hunting, Porter Phillips, Terry Hadlock, Bob and Bill Murray and Eddie Merkley.

Attending from outside points were Mr. and Mrs. Milt Murray, Maeser; The Clair Fletcher family, Salt Lake City; The Glenn Murray family, Jensen; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Trevnen, Maybell, Colorado; Mrs. Mabel and Mrs. David Jenkins, Lapoint; O. B. Colton, Mrs. Ed Labrum and Mrs. Alice Labrum, Roosevelt.

Brief History
Jeremiah Hatch Murray Jr., was born April 2, 1878, at Spanish Fork, Utah a son of Jeremiah Hatch Sr. and Mary Ashby Murray. They lived on a small farm there.

On November 18, 1888 he moved with his parents to the Ashley Valley and settled in Mill Ward, now known as Maeser. The father and boys went in the mountain and cut logs for a large, one-room house for the winter,

In three years time they had built a five-room brick house, burning their own brick and put their farm under cultivation. He received most of his schooling in the Maeser School. He married Pearl Karren. She died in May 1900. On February 2, 1902 he married Rachel Merkley. To this union were born six children, four boys and two girls. Rachel died April 13, 1917, leaving him with a small family to raise.

He was a civic worker, farmer and stock raiser and a friend to all. During the flu in 1918 he worked side by side with the doctors day and night.

The fall of 1914 he was elected sheriff of Uintah County and took office January 1 where he served two terms.

He is survived by sons and daughters, Ivan, Meeker; Milt, Glenn, Jensen; Nyle, Moses Lake, Washington; Mrs. Lindsay (Merle) Oaks, Vernal; Mrs. Clair (Ellen) Fletcher, Salt Lake City; 26 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Joseph S. Murray, Sacramento, California and William A. Murray, Vernal.
