When Matilda Annette 'Nettie' Pratt was born on March 8, 1873, her father, George, was 34, and her mother, Olive, was 18. She was their second child together. She has alternately used "Annette" and "Matilda" as her first name. She grew up on a ranch, the oldest of 14 children born to her parents (a sister born before her died as an infant). She was named for her maternal grandmother Matilda. She was known to most by her nickname, "Nettie" . She never married. Her father was literate, but after Nettie learned to read, she signed papers for him because he did not want to be found out as being in America illegally, as he'd stowed away on a ship from Ireland. Her father first worked for her grandfather, Captian Jefferson Hunt in the wagon/ transportation business. He was frequently gone on long hauls in her younger years, putting a lot of responsibility on her for helping Olive with the younger children. Eventually her dad came to live more frequently at home, taking over the business of the cattle ranch.

She attended school at home, where Olive ran a small school, then attended Teacher's College in Pocatello, setting a precident for her sisters to follow, 4 more of them trained to be teachers as she was. This was to be her life-long profession.

Nettie traveled to visit a lot of relatives in California, Nevada and Oregon in her later years. She died on January 31, 1952, in Bellflower, California, at the age of 78 visiting her sister's family in Los Angeles. Although her funeral was in Pasadena, she was buried with her Idaho family in Downey, Idaho.
