Mary Ellen Miner was born May 10th 1857 in Carol Twnp, Reynolds Co., Missouri, the youngest child of Woodson and Sarah "Cox" Miner.

Her parents died when she was a young girl and she spent her childhood living with various families. She married in 1872 at the age of thirteen to Peter Black. Mary would give birth to thirteen children, nine living to adulthood.

She and her family left Missouri in 1883 for Arkansas to Scott County where her brother Mack Miner lived, with whom she was very close.

The family landed in the Courtney/Petersburg community about 1908. When they first arrived they stayed in a tent on land owned by Mike Bourland. They purchased land in 1910 and built a home.

Peter and Mary separated in 1914 and Mary lived with her daughter Ida and husband Joe Ellis and family.

She and Peter were reconciled and remarried in 1920 and they purchased 60 acres just west of todays Petersburg community building. They lived there in a small home until Mary died June 26, 1924.

It was said that strange lights could at times be seen in the Bourland Cemetery at night. For this reason Mary refused to be buried there and requested burial in the Petersburg Cemetery.
