"Mack", as he was called, was born Marshall Maston Black May 18th, 1893 in the small community of Boles in Scott Co., Arkansas to Peter and Mary Ellen (Miner) Black. He attended school in the area where his family was involved in farming and lumbering.

In 1908, when he was fifteen, the family moved west to Belleville, OK. While attending school at Belleville he met Lydia Barrett. Lydia was born May 8, 1891 in TX the daughter of G.B. Barrett. The Barretts lived on a farm about half a mile north of the Blacks.

The two were married on the 14th of Nov, 1914 and lived in a small home at the edge of the woods on Mack's brother Jesse's place. Back then people often started out with a canvass tent and then built the wooden house around the tent. Their home was located a few hundred yards west of Jesse Blacks home. Mack's parents Peter and Mary lived an equal distance to the north.

About 1916 Mack and Lydia moved to New Mexico to Stanley where their daughter Amarildia Black was born May 22, 1916. Mack's parents Peter and Mary separated for a few years and Peter joined his son in New Mexico for a time.

They resided a short time in Johnson County, NM before returning to Belleville. Their daughter Christine was born Apr 12, 1919 at Belleville and Odis Cleburn Black was born Sept 5, 1922. The children attended school at Belleville until the family left the area in 1925 and settled at Hockley, TX where Dorothy Jean Black was born Dec 21, 1926.

Eventually the family settled at Leveland, TX where Mack owned and operated a laundry. Mack died June 1, 1940.
