Obituary

Page: 3 | Section: Mortuary

Hugo Kuyper died at his home, 410 Liberty Street, at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 1923, aged 89 years, 7 months, and 7 days. His death followed an attack of influenza.

Funeral services are appointed for Thursday afternoon at three o'clock at the First Ref. church. Interment will be at the First Reformed Cemetery.

Mr. Kuyper was a man identified with Pella almost from the beginning, coming here as a boy soon after the first colony arrived.

He was long engaged in business, for a time as a clock maker and later as a general merchant. He continued in the latter business until almost eighty years old.

He served the city of Pella as member of the city council and as mayor, also served for many years as an officer of the school board.

He was active in Christian work, serving for many years as a member of the official board of the First Reformed church, and teaching for nearly twenty years a men's class in the Sunday school of the Baptist church. This latter work continued until he was past eighty, and many members of the class recall his unusual grasp of scriptural truth.

He was a man of irreproachable business integrity, a citizen that shirked no duty, and a man of the noblest character.

Notes
Arrived in New York on 15 Jun 1849 sailing from Rotterdam, Netherlands on ship Franzelia.
