3 KILLED AS 4 CARS CRASH NEAR TOOELE
Trucker and S.L. Couple Lose Lives
A weird semi-delayed four-car mishap claimed three lives last night on U.S. Highway 40-50, about 50 miles west of Tooele, Utah.
The fatality victims were Dominic Donati, 50, Wells, Nev., and Mr. and Mrs. Arvid J. Johnson, both about 60, Salt Lake City.
Sheriff Fay Gillet, who investigated the accident, called it the strangest in the county's history.
Dominic, driving a ton and a half truck, was flagged to a stop by a motorist, T. E. Whittington, 31, Bakersfield, Calif., whose car had stalled. While the two men were trying to start the car, a third passenger auto, driven by Johnson and his wife, zoomed out of the darkness and smashed into the rear of the truck.
The impact hurled the truck 350 feet, killing Johnson instantly. Mrs. Johnson was thrown from the vehicle and suffered only minor injuries.
As she was helped to her feet by Dominic, a fourth car, coming in the oposite direction, careened out of control as it tried to avoid the tangled wreckage. The fourth auto, driven by Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Miller, 31, Ely, Nev., struck Dominic, killing him instantly, rolled over and crushed Mrs. Johnson who had crawled off the highway to the side of the road.
Mrs. Johnson died a few minutes later.
The Millers were not injured and were taken to their Ely, Nevada home.
Through the series of mishaps, Whittington, the man who had first summoned aid that started the chain reaction, escaped unhurt.
