Vernon was a US Army veteran of WWII having served as a combat medic. The 86th [BLACK HAWK] division, in which he served, was one of only two divisions [in WWII] to see combat in both Europe and the Pacific in 1945. He was employed at the STANDARD OIL REFINERY in Sugar Creek, Missouri at the time of his accidental death from a fall at his home. He is buried adjacent to his youngest son Guy, his wife Mary, brothers [Carroll & Keith] and parents. At the time of his dead he was survived by his wife Mary Lou and their children Stuart, Cynthia, Vernon Jr., Guy, Lydia Jane and Ava.
