John was the son of John Ross and Mary Macklin. He married Jane Ayres (daughter of David E. Ayres Jr. and Ann Ross) on Nov 22 1822 in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, PA. They were the parents of Ayres, Mary (1825-1912, Carlisle Casiday 1819-1892 NE), William, Ann (1829-1913, Samuel Latchaw), John, Eli, Isaac (1837-1907), Jane, and Elizabeth Ross.


History of Cedar Co., Iowa - John Ross was born on Sep 6 1793 in York County, PA. He resided at an inn by a toll-gate on the Cumberland Turnpike after 1794 in York County, PA. He was described as 5'7" with dark hair, grey eyes and dark complexion in 1814 in York County, PA. He resided at York County between 1814 and 1822 in Pennsylvania. He served in the military on Aug 26 1814 in York County, PA. He was a soldier in Capt. John Beachler's Co. of Inf., 3 Reg't Pennsylvania Militia, in the War of 1812. He had seen General George Washington 3 times and had talked with him. Note- children were born in Andersonstown, Monaghan Twp, York County, PA. Andersonstown was located about 6 miles southeast of Dillsburg

He was a blacksmith before 1839. He resided at Irwin township between 1839 and 1851 in Venango County, PA. He emigrated in 1853 when the family took a boat down the Allegheny River, to the Monongahela River, to the Ohio River, to the Mississippi River. They went up river and docked where the present city of Muscatine is located. From there, they went about 25 miles north and took a homestead on Sugar Creek. It was about 9 miles southeast of Tipton. There he built a log house and lived out the rest of his life.

He resided at the Ross farm located in Section 36, Center Twp. Wilton, IA between 1853 and 1878 in Cedar County, IA. It was purchased from the government (SW 1/4, Sec 36) on June 3, 1854, for $1.25 per acre - $200.

John died on Apr 5, 1881 in Center Twp, Cedar County, IA in his home. He was buried on Apr 7, 1881 in Ross-East Fork Cemetery, Center Twp, Cedar County, IA.

FROM THE CEDAR COUNTY HISTORY 1878: Ross , John, retired farmer, Section 36; Post Office Wilton; born in York County Pennsylvania, September 6, 1793; he learned the black-smith trade. He was in the war of 1812. He is one of the few now living who has seen Gen. George Washington. He remembers seeing him three times and talking with him. Mr. Ross lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland many years; came to Cedar County in 1853 and engaged in farming. He is now 84 years old. Married Jane Pullinger, formerly Jane Ayers, from York County, Pennsylvania, in 1822. They have been married fifty-five years, and have eight children--Ayers, William, Eli, Isaac N., Mary, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth; lost three children.

Notes from Martin T Funk's obituary "He married Jane A Ross 10/06/1856. Her father was a direct descendant of Betsy Ross, who made the first American flag, and a veteran of the war of 1812. He used to tell of the time President George Washington held him on his lap when he stopped one night at a tavern in Maryland, which his father owned".
