Phyllis McKinney was born June 21, 1932, at Madison to Leo and Hilda (Granflaten) McKinney. She attended Madison High School and married Gene Borchardt on Sept. 25, 1949, at Madison. They lived in Portland, Ore., Sioux Falls, Sioux City and Fort Worth, Texas, before retiring in Madison.

In Sioux City, she worked with developmentally disabled persons. She was involved with Girl Scouts for more than 30 years, from being a member to becoming a leader. She was named Demolay Mother of the Year in Sioux City in 1979.

She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Madison Doll Lovers Club, Minnehaha Dollars of South Dakota and National Federation of Doll Clubs. She was one of the founders of the Madison Doll Lovers Club and gave many doll shows. She organized craft shows in Texas, Iowa and South Dakota for the Special Olympics, school bands, senior citizens and others.

Survivors include her husband, Gene of Madison; three daughters, Pam (Bob) Metz of Germantown, Tenn., Marcia (Bill) Weitzel of Eagan, Minn., and Laurie (Todd) Unbehaun of Dodgeville, Wis.; four sons, Russ (Theresa) of Mesa, Ariz., Randy (Janet) of Marina, Calif., Ron (Sara) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Deno (Lindy) of Fort Worth, Texas; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a brother, Don (Barbara) McKinney of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Diane Thomason of Quinlan, Texas, Audrey (Carl) Haines of Hemet, Calif., and Marlys Duggan of Denver, Colo.; and five sisters-in-law, Kay McKinney of Los Angeles, Calif., Lorraine McKinney of Manchester, N.H., Irene Theel of Hartford, Lydia (Robert) Hendricks and Erna Caproon, both of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lyle and Bob McKinney; and a sister, Delores.
