Diane Bates Thomason of Quinlan died the night of Oct. 12, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

The daughter of Leo and Hilda Granflatten McKinney, she was born in Madison, S.D.

Mrs. Thomason was a display artist and was a member of the Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 17, Greenville; a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Alyfar Shrine, San Antonio; and was founder of San Antonio Writers Guild in 1975 in San Antonio. She held many patents, one of which was a Designer Patent for the official game of Hemisfair in 1968 and named Mini-Tour.

In September 1996 she spearheaded and was the global-wide coordianator of the drive for the Audie Murphy postage stamp.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen C. Bates of San Antonio and James P. Bates of Richardson; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Bates of The Woodlands; a grandson, Jason Bates; two granddaughters, Ashley Bates of The Woodlands and Amanda Bates of San Antonio; sisters and brothers-in-law Phyllis and Gene Borchardt of Madison, S.D., Audry and Carl Haines of Hemet, Calif., and Mablys Duggan of Litteton, Colo.; a brother, Donald D. and loving wife Barbara McKinney of Burleson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Kenneth and Dotty Thomason of Greenville and Jerry and Evelyn Thomason of Wolfe City; sister-in-law Janie McInnis of Greenville; several good friends and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, A.F. St. Col. E.P. 'Ted' Bates; second husband James T. Thomason on Feb. 23, 2002; a son, Ted Bates Jr. in 1995; one sister and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to Ladies Auxiliary Unit 17, 4509 Moulton, Greenville, 75401, to help children and the needy.
