Eugene E. "Gene" Borchardt, former Madison mayor, died Dec. 17, 2005, at his home in Apache Junction, Ariz., after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held in Arizona and a funeral service and interment will be held in Madison. No dates are set.

Borchardt was born Dec. 22, 1927, at Madison to Emil and Alwine (Hannemann) Borchardt. After graduating from Ramona High School, he served for four years in the U.S. Army with the 51st Signal Battalion. He married Phyllis McKinney on Sept. 25, 1949, at Madison.

He attended Nettleton Business College. He worked for Cargill, Inc. for 38 years in various locations, including Sioux City, Iowa, Portland, Ore., Sioux Falls, Sidney, Ohio, and Saginaw, Texas. After retirement in 1988, they returned to Madison. He then worked part-time for the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. He served as mayor of Madison from 1992-1995.

From 1990-92, he was American Legion Commander of Post Lake County. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Madison, McKibbon-Mosher American Post #25, life member of Evergreen Lodge #17 AF & AM, Morningside Lodge #615 AF & AM and Elks Lodge #1442. He was a past officer and member of the ABU-BEKR Shrine Clown unit and past president of the Saginaw, Texas, Lions Club.

He moved to Apache Junction in November 2004 after his wife's death.

Survivors include four sons, Russ (Theresa) of Mesa, Ariz., Randy (Janet) of Marina, Calif., Ron (Sara) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Geno (Lindy) of Fort Worth, Texas; three daughters, Pam (Bob) Metz of Germantown, Tenn., Marcia (Bill) Weitzel of Eagan, Minn., and Laurie (Todd) Unbehaun of Dodgeville, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and two sisters, Lydia (Bob) Hendricks and Erna Caproon, both of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Clem; and four sisters, Clara, Irene, Florence and Margaret.
