Obituary from The Times-News (Nephi, UT) - Friday, July 15, 1904:
John Warwood died last Monday morning from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy received about one week ago while at work in the hay field. Thus passes another of the conspicuous characters of this section.
Mr. Warwood was born in Warwickshire, England in the year 1837. He was married at Rugby to Miss Rachel Hunt in the year 1855 and emigrated to America, landing at Salt Lake in the fall of the same year. One year later he removed to Manti where he resided until 1858 when he came to Nephi which has since been his home.
Mr. Warwood took an active part during the various Indian troubles and was always on hand and at his post of duty during times of danger. In the early days he drove stage between this place and Manti and in this capacity he ran many narrow risks.
Mr. Warwood was also one of the pioneers in Utah railroading. He was the first locomotive engineer to make the trip from Salt Lake City to Sandy, (now Bingham) on the Utah Central railroad. He also took the first train over the San Pete Valley railroad from Nephi to Manti. during the latter trip the train wrecked on the divide just east of this place. In this wreck he sustained some serious and lasting injuries. Among others who accompanied Mr. Warwood on this trip were Zee Whittaker, of this place, who was fireman, and Simon Bamberger of Salt Lake, who occupied a seat with him in the cab. His service as engineer on the various roads, including the Salt lake and Ft. Douglas and the Oregon Short Line extended over a period of more than twenty years.
The funeral took place from the second ward meeting house Wednesday at 2 p.m.
