Gottlieb Adolph Karau was born in Drzewianowo, (Hohenwalde) Nakel, Posen, West Prussia.

GOTTLIEB KARAU, AGED WAR VETERAN DIES

Gottlieb Karau, 91, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died this morning at Pine Crest. He had been ill for the past 10 days.

Mr. Karau, one of the few remaining Spanish-American War veterans on the nation, was born August 7, 1875 in Germany, the son of Christ Karau. He came to this country at an early age and had resided in Lincoln County for 85 years, 31 of them in Merrill. He as a retired farmer and logger.

He was married to Auguste Krajewski on November 21, 1903 in Merrill. Mrs, Karau survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Mrs. William (Alma) Schlief) of Merrill. A daughter Helen, two grandchildren, seven brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services, including military rites, will be held Friday with services at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home. Rev. Dale Kuck of St. Stephens United Church of Christ of which Mr. Karau was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park. Friends of the family may call to pay their respects at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Thursday until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday until the hour of services.

FIRING SQUAD

Members of the firing squad American Legion, VFW, and WWI Barracks are asked to meet at 1:50 p.m. on Friday at the American Legion Hall to participate in Military rites for Gottlieb Karau, a veteran of the Spanish American War.

Final Rites Held ---Gottlieb Karau:

Funeral services were held for Gottlieb Karau were held June 30, at 2 p.m. from the Taylor Funeral Home. Rev. Dake Kuck officiated. Interment as in the Merrill Memorial Park. Pallbearers were: Carl Karau, Leslie Karau, Leo Hiller, Norman Pankow, Ervin Lange and Herbert Krajewski.

Military graveside rites were conducted by members of the American Legion and the V.F.W. firing squad under the direction of Fred Muschinski. The firing squad was Leon Knopse, Pat Chilsen, Oscar Odegard, Marvin Neuman and Wayne Wilber. Robert Nienow was the color guard, the honor guard consisted of C.F. Noble, Arthur Nienow, Arnold Boettcher, Alfred La Gessie, Harold Morgan, George Severt and Carl Kamke.

Folding of the flag was done by A.W. Kordick and Chaplain L.C. Hackbarth presented the flag to the nearest of kin.
