E.R. was the son of Robert Andrews and Jane Mandaville Andrews; and brother of Hiram, Alsinus and Eda. He married Delaphina Brooks on October 14, 1868.

E.R. was raised by his mother because his father was killed in a mill pond dam failure. After he married Della Brooks, he journeyed by raft, stagecoach & boat to Nebraska; operated a trading post & dealt with many people, including Chief Sitting Bull. The family later moved to Boone County Arkansas having a mill, post office & cotton gin. They had 15 children:
