Mondel Earl Hays, son of David and Harriet Hays, was born February 14, 1873 in Clarke county and died at the Osceola Hospital May 11, 1952 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 27 days.

When he was 14 years of age, he moved with his parents to Shelby county and later to Crawford county. The family moved to South Dakota and returned again to Crawford county. He was married to Margaret A. (Umland) of Manilla in 1902. To this union eight children were born, Gilbert Earl who died at the age of 11; Roscoe, George, Sears and Chester of Osceola; Mrs. Clayton Mateer, Mrs. Cecil Loomis and Mrs. Maxine Vawn, also of Osceola.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 15, from the Presbyterian church with Rev. John Klosterboer officiating. Mrs John Downey was soloist, accompanied by Mrs Ray Hayes at the organ. Pallbearers were John Bargenquast, Peter Carstens, E.C. Armstrong, Fred Schram, Jake Seivertsen and Ralph Elwell. Earlier services were held Wednesday, May 14, from a funeral home in Osceola at 1 p.m. with Rev. Lester Hall in charge. Music was furnished by Mary Westfall and Emil Rinderspacher.

Survivors also include a daughter-in-law, Mrs George Hays, three brothers, Gilbert of Grasse Buttes, North Dakota; Clyde of Sidney, New York and Harry of Manning; three sisters, Mrs Kate Iler of Laurel, Nebraska, Mrs Nora Tobin and Mrs Zoa Tobin of Huron, South Dakota, 11 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He devoted his entire life to farming; fifteen years in Crawford county and the remainder in Clarke county. Interment was in the Nishnabotna cemetery.
