Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Metz, 71, of 1083 Belmont Ave, former minor league ball player, dropped dead Monday evening while at work at St. Marys Hospital where he was a maintenance man. He was born in Lonaconing, Md. and came from Lafayette, Colo., to Long Beach 34 years ago.
Metz formerly played in the Texas and Western Leagues and with Indianapolis in the American Association. Here he played on the all-star semi-pro Shell Oil Club that was prominent in Long Beach in the late 1920s and early 30s.
He was a member of First Foursquare Gospel church. Surviving are his wife, Rosedel; a son, Benjamin F. Jr., Miami, Fla.; a daughter; Mrs Ione Soderberg, Avenal; two brothers, John and Charles Metz; two sisters, Mrs. Alda LaSalle and Mrs. Frances Osborn; two grandchildren.
Services will be directed by the Coon Funeral Home.
