John Robert Holmes, 84, of 1201 W. Northmoor died at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Proctor Hospital. Born April 1, 1918, in Mossville to John and Frances Wilhelm Holmes, he married Marna Fox in 1943. She died in 1968. He married Anna Ruth Burton on June 24, 1971. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, James (and Ellen) of Fairfax Station, Va., Tom (and Betty) of Vienna, Va., and Ted (and Michele) of Baxley, Ga.; one daughter, Laurel (and Kent) Morsch of Wayland, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Linda (and Bob) Brittingham of Memphis, Tenn., and Susan (and Dick) Hill of Lansing, Mich.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one brother, Donald Holmes of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Jean Keithley of Peoria. He also was preceded in death by one son, David.

A World War II Army Air Forces veteran, he was a B-24 pilot, flying between India and China.

He attended Bradley University.

He was a farmer in the Dunlap area for 40 years. He served as president of the high and grade school boards in Dunlap.

He was a 50-year member of Alta Lodge 748, AF&AM.
