Born in Stuart, Oklahoma, he was the son of Sam and Susan (Johnson) Harmon. He was one of eight sons. He attended Southwest Missouri State University on a football scholarship and earned his degree in business. He is an honored member of that university's football hall of fame. He served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a decorated hero. He lived many years in Missouri where he taught school and coached football. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

"Harold has always been very private and very independent. He was talented in athletics during his high school and college years. He has a college degree from Southwest Missouri in Springfield, Mo. and a master's degree from Missouri University. He taught and coached in Missouri all his professional life and lives there to this day. His plans are to be buried at Pryor Cemetery when his life is over. He is a member of the Southwest Missouri State University Athletic Hall of Fame. He served in the Army during WWII and was a Lt. when he was discharged. He also earned the purple heart for being wounded. He is still very much interested in sports of all kinds. He never married." Memories - Summer 1999, Arvis Harmon.
