Bertha Clara Bechman was the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Wetzel) Bechman. Bertha married John Franklin "Frank" Stephan on April 17, 1910 in Jefferson County, Indiana in a double wedding with Peter Bodem (1st cousin of Frank's) and Barbara Yiesla. Frank and Bertha had 2 children, Dorothy Jean Stephan and Eleanor H. (Stephan) Becht.
