Born 3 Nov 1845, in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of German immigrant Justinian Bechman & Catherine Friedersdorff.

Lone family survivor of cholera outbreak in Cincinnati that killed his mother and 2 brothers in 1849.
He was sent to live with his maternal grandparents in Madison, Indiana, and remained with them after his father remarried in Cincinnati.
Lewis married Elizabeth Wetzel of Madison, Indiana on 19 Jan 1871, and had 11 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood.
Lewis died on 18 Jan 1916 at his farm in Madison, survived by his wife and his 9 adult children.
