In 1845, as a boy not yet three years old, John and his parents left England and settled at West Sparta, NY.

John and Susan (Croston) Barber had at least four children who reached adulthood; Minnie E., who did not marry, Helen May, who married William C. Pelton and Harskaline Collins, Anna who married George Bowman H. H. Collins and John Junior. There may have been another child, who married George Bowan of Newark, Wayne County, NY.

"Dansville - John Barber of Mertensia, Ontario County, a brother of Dr. Barber of this village, is seriously ill and it is feared he cannot recover. He came from England when a boy and lived the most of his life in Sparta and Mt. Morris, moving to his present place of residence a year ago." (Jan. 12, 1905, The Dansville Express, NY)

"Died at Mertenisa, March 21st, John Barber, aged 61 years. Burial at Dansville." (March 23, 1906, The Ontario Repository and Messenger of Canandaigua, NY)
