On March 12, 1792 in Southampton, Virginia, Robert married Rhoda "Rosa" Drewry (ABT. 1768 - Southampton County, Virginia - 1826 Conecuh, Alabama), daughter of Humphrey Drewry (20 SEP 1730 Charles Parish, York, Virginia, American Colonies - 17 JUL 1797 Southampton, Virginia) and Rachel Drewry (5 FEB 1728 Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts Colony - BEF. 1796 Southampton County, Virginia). December 29, 1898 - On December 20th near Caney branch, on Butler springs road 7 miles west of Greenville, Wyey Henderson shot and killed Phil Andrews, both of Monroe County. December 30, 1898 - The preliminary trial at Greenville of Wiley Henderson for the murder of Phil Andrews, which was set for December 24, was postponed until Monday, January 2.

James Andrews, born 1849 is found in the 1900 Wilcox County Alabama census married to Alabama A, Andrews born 1880. There are 4 adopted children in their household: (1) BUD J., born May 1887 (2) CLARENCE, born 1889 (3) ANNIE born October 1890 (4) AGES? born September 1893. The newspaper called Jim, a man of 55,, "OLD MAN JIM". He was married to a 24 year old, not that uncommon in that day. Are these adopted children ALABAMBA'S siblings? Why were his two sons so angry that the would result to murder?

It appears that this son of James N. Andrews may have been married 3 times. The first to Manerva Ann Collins (divorced); second to a woman named Maggie Lee Holder (this woman may have been a widow and the children with James and 3rd wife Bama in 1900 are Maggie's children adopted by James before his marriage to Bama. James and Bama had children before their deaths in 1904.

This is the son of James N. and Elizabeth (Owens) Andrews. His first marriage was to Manerva A. Collins, with whom he had children. They divorced (uncommon for that day) and he later married Alabama (referred to as Bama in the news report). It hasn't been determined if the children in the home were Bama's siblings or who they were. Her mother was in the household with them in the 1900 census. A record indicates James and Bama had children before they were murdered. One reference states the sons from his first marriage killed them. A writer who supposedly spoke with an Andrews son was told James had beaten Bama. They were acquitted. Any newspaper article that clarifies anything has yet to be found. As for the "old man" reference, in that day, he probably was considered old.

Mary Strickland believes that the 4 children listed as adopted on the 1900 census may actually be the natural born children of James Andrews and Maggie Holder. Possibly listed as adopted because new wife Bama may have been the one answering the census takers questions and she considered herself as having adopted them when she married James. Creating a deeper mystery is the listing on the census of Roberson C. Holder age 15 as a servant. Roberson later identified himself as Roberson Cruesoe Andrews and his mother was Maggie Holder. Looking at his date of birth it can be speculated that Roberson may have been born illegitimate and possibly the cause of the divorce between James and his first wife Minerva. James apparently went on to marry Maggie Holder and have 4 more children with her before her death in 1898. He then promptly married Bama. James and Bama did have two children, a son Burgess and daughter named Bama after her mother. Both children were raised by Bama's mother and later adopted by other relatives after the murder of their parents. As an interesting side note, even though James' sons John and Robert were given life sentences for the murders, they were both acquitted after just a couple of years in prison because of a technicality in choosing the jury. Newspaper articles detail the events of the murders. Apparently the sons were angry because their father had decided to will all of his property to his new wife Bama.

Mary Strickland has confirmed that Roberson Crusoe Andrews was the biological son of James "Jim" Andrews and Maggie Holder, as well as Bud James, Clarence, Annie Lee and Agyness Gennis Andrews. She has located a newspaper article from one of the early trials of the murders of Jim and Bama that contains actual testimony where Roberson verifies that Mag Holder is his mother and James Andrews is his father.

Mary says concerning John and Bob Andrews, that Bob Andrews did get a re-trial in 1908. This retrial was a result of the Alabama Supreme Court declaring that irregularities in the jury selection at the previous trial merited a new trial in a new venue. At this trial, located this time in Selma, Alabama, the testimony of Annie and Agyness changed. It was claimed that both children's initial testimony had been tampered with by their Aunt Martha Andrews, sister of Jim Andrews. She had been given guardianship of the children. The jury found Bob not guilty and he was fully exonerated of the crime.

As far as John Andrews, he was paroled from prison on December 23, 1909 by Governor B. B. Comer. A request for a full pardon was requested on Jan. 12, 1910. On Jan 18, 1911, Governor Comer restored John Andrews full political and civil rights. The feeling Mary Strickland gets from this action was that the governor believed that the death of Jim Andrews was the result of an accidental shooting when John and his father struggled over the gun. Mary thinks that the truth of what happened is most likely Jim murdered Bama in a drunken rage. The details of her murder read like a crime of passion, not a cold blooded murder.

Mary descends from James "Jim" Andrews and his first wife Minerva Collins (her great- great grandparents), hence her deep interest in his death. For a long time, no one knew why Bob and John Andrews had both been released from prison so soon after they were both sentenced to life in prison. Bob moved to Laurel, Mississippi where he eventually opened a "lunch room" (The 1920's version of a fast food restaurant) as did his brother Joseph William Andrews (Mary's great grandfather). The brothers were married to sisters Ella and Martha "Evvie Lee" Pugh.

(xxi.) Andrew Phillip Andrews(11 NOV 1851 Monroe County, Alabama - 20 DEC 1898 Monroe Cty Alabama)
