James N. Andrews was born in 1802 in Statesburg, Sumter County, South Carolina. He was the son of Robert Andrews, a carriage maker, and Rhoda "Rosa" Drewry and had 10 brothers and sisters. His most well known sibling is Captain Robert Westberry Andrews, a colorful character known as the "Famous Pedestrian". Other siblings were Nancy Ann, Judith, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, Olive, Thomas and John.

James N Andrews married Ann Bonds in 1820. Their children were William, Arra Martha, Mary Caroline, Nancy Emmaline plus 4 daughters and 1 son whose names we do not know. James and Ann Andrews left South Carolina about 1828 and settled in what is now Conecuh County, Alabama. After his 1st wife Ann died in 1840, Robert married Elizabeth Anne Owens. Their children are Robert, Mary Jane, John A., Narcissa, Lizzie Beth, James, Andrew Phillip and Martha.
