Born July 4, 1790, Robert Westberry Andrews was one of 12 children whose parents had come to SC from Northampton, VA. His father was a carriage and wagon maker. Robert remained with his family until 1812 when his spirit of adventure and travel took over his life.

At age 96, he had walked more than 7,000 miles in pursuit of various interests. At one point, he became interested in shipbuilding during a visit to the state of Maine. After building 2 ships, he traveled again. This time to New York where he raised bees and marketed the honey.

From New York, he traveled to Massachusetts where he drove a stagecoach. From there, he became homesick for South Carolina and headed, by ship, to Charleston. From Charleston he walked home to Stateburg - 103 miles.

This was written of him in "The Boston Globe, August 27, 1886" ---
"Captain Robert W Andrews of Sumter, SC, well deserves the reputation as a great American traveler. He is now 96 years old, and in the past two years has traveled upwards of 7,000 miles in his pedestrian trips through the county. This is counting for the long trips only, as he does not count walks of 100 miles or so..."

He married twice: Harriet Starks who died in 1835 and Mary Elizabeth Connors, mother of all of his children.

His autobiography is fascinating - as was his life. He wrote, firsthand of Potter's Raid and Reconstruction and of his small dog and companion, "Fido."

Captain Robert Westberry Andrews, died at the age of 104 and left behind an enormous family of Jacksons, Jenkinsons, Cavanaughs, Griffins, Ardises, Barwicks, Bradwells, Richardsons and others.
