John Coppenbarger was born in Wytheville, Wythe, VA. On 11 Mar 1818 he married Matilda Shugart in Marysville, Blount Co., TN. On 29th of October 1824 John Coppenbarger, his wife Matilda, his mother-in-law, Lucinda “Lucy” and her two sons, Zion and Edom, arrived in present-day Macon County, Illinois where they spent their first winter together in one cabin. That spring, John built a home on the banks of South Creek. His deed was registered in Vandalia, Illinois. on 17 Oct 1829. The plot of land was West 1/2 of the S.W. 1/4 of Sec 8, in what is now Tunbridge Twp., DeWitt Co., IL. John among his other skills was a millwright and built the first gristmill in this vicinity. The millstones "burrs", which did the grinding, were fashioned by hand from a local black rock. Matilda's brother Zion Shugart helped engineer the mill and. Matilda's other brother Edom taught the first school in this area. After the death of Matilda on 23 Dec 1833, John married Mary Newcomb On 30 Apr 1835. Mary Newcomb had come to Macon county from Kentucky along with her brother Daniel and with Jack Henderson. Daniel became a school teacher and taught in DeWitt County Schools. Jack Henderson’s daughter Nancy married George Coppenbarger, brother of John Coppenbarger. John served in the war of 1812 when he was only 15 year old. Later he was to fight in the Black Hawk wars.
