In 1824 Jacob was one of the earlier settlers in DeWitt County. The first school was taught in his home by Edom Shugart. Jacob married Catherine Snavely about 1796 in Wythe County, VA. Jacob was a witness to the birth of America. He was born in an English Colony and by the time he was twenty years old, he lived in a new country and "The Bill of Rights" were being added to the new constitution. Jacobs son John built the first gristmill in DeWitt Co. Jacobs daughter Mary Ann married Elishah Butler, one of the first marriages in DeWitt Co. Three of Jacobs sons, John, George and Elias served during the Black Hawk war while later his son Jacob also served during the Mexican war. JACOB COPPENBARGER and CATHERINE SNAVELY had 12 Children.
