Civil war veteran. Served with Co. "B", 7th Ill. Vol. Inf. Regiment. After the war ht married Mary Lightholder. She bore him four children: Sarah Margaret (1867-1903); William (1869-1952); Rosa (1872-1911); and Harriet, who died of whooping cough while very young. In 1877 Mary also passed away leaving Joe with three motherless young children. In 1879 he married Lavlett Dillon, who gave him ten more children, most of whom were born on a farm northeast of Corwin, Kansas.
