Charles Wesley Washington was born August 28, 1945 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of John Lewis Washington, Sr. and Sadie Amelia Finley Washington.

Charles attended Douglas School in Winchester, VA. He also attended Jenny Dean Vocational School where he was certified in Auto Mechanics, and later attended Police Academy in Weyers Cave, VA.

Mr. Washington married Sharon Yvette Medley on July 29, 1967 in Stephens City, Virginia. They were married 52 years and from this union they have four children.

As a young man, Charles worked as a Correctional Officer at the Intake Jail and then was promoted to Deputy Sherriff for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department as a Road Deputy. He then worked as a Police Officer for the Town of Stephens City, VA. Charles was the first black to hold these positions, which opened the doors for others after him. Charles was also a professional driver for over 40 years which included driving buses for Winchester City and Frederick County Public Schools and Winchester City Transit. He also drove tractor trailers for many years and was lastly employed by Skyline Express. During his career as a truck driver, he received several safe driver awards and recognitions.

Charlesey or C.W., as he was affectionately known by family and friends, loved fishing with his children and grandchildren, and especially with his son, Chukkee. He taught them a lot, but most importantly to not feed the fish by improperly baiting your hook and to not scare the fish away by making noise or throwing rocks in the water. He particularly didn't like it when they caught more than he did. The size of the fish didn't matter...but "how many" did. He also shared his love of fishing with his brothers Richard and Franklin, his nephew Bryan, and three of his best friends, Edward "Pinky" Polston, Rick Brown, and Robert "Hambone" Arnold. After his fishing trips, he often would call around to give the fish (and sometimes turtles he caught) away.

CW’s greatest joy, next to his family was antique cars and trucks and street rods. He enjoyed going to car shows with "Hambone" and his brother, Butch Baker. He and their many other car fanatic friends would always make sure they knew where the next car show was. He owned several cars over the years and his passion was working on and restoring them. His first baby was a black ‘62 Chevy Biscayne that he called “Hurry Sundown”. His prize possessions also included an orange ‘55 Bel Air and a black ‘48 Chevy, but his pride and joy was his canary yellow ‘48 Chevy which he called “Old Yeller”. His family was told that he was the first black man in our area, at an early age, to have a love for cars and fixing them up to be classics. He was instrumental in teaching others that had the same interest.

Charles’s other thrills came from going to thrift stores, yard sales, and auctions. He often gifted or "tried" to gift his treasures to his family. He could find anything you were in need of, whether it was a specific type of lug nut or even a car. He was always willing to help anyone he could, all you had to do was ask.

Mr. Washington departed this life on Friday, June 26, 2020 at the Winchester Medical Center. In addition to his wife, Sharon, he leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Charles Wesley Washington, Jr. of Winchester, VA and William Ray Jenkins (Norrissa) of Martinsburg, WV; two daughters, Charmissa Denise-Elizabeth Biscoe (Kevin) of Stephens City, VA and Keysha Dawn Mathes (Gregg) of Winchester, VA; five granddaughters, Twana Myers, Nykeya Paige (Benjamin), Shauneece Mathes, Asia Mathes, and Tasha Virts (Billy); nine grandsons, Gregory Mathes, Sr. (Jacquelyn), Robert Thomas (Ieshia Fogle), Tyrell Biscoe (December), William Jenkins, Jr., Asaion Jenkins, ZyQuay Jenkins, Neko Jenkins, Amir Jenkins, and Kyyon Jenkins; nine great-grandchildren; Amani Thomas, Amaya Thomas, Gregory Mathes, Jr., Shawn Virts, McKenzie Mathes, Aryanna Thomas, Zoe Mathes, Korben Paige, and Selah Paige, and three God-great grandchildren, Aeriuna Elliott, Xavion Elliott, and Amorah Elliott; two sisters, his twin, Charlena Childs of Laurel, MD and Elizabeth Washington Washington (James) of Winchester, VA; four sisters-in-law, Christine Washington, Barbara Washington, Denise Medley, and Toni McBride; two brothers-in-law, Dennis Medley and Blane Medley (Ginger); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, a grandson, Joshua Allen Washington; a sister, Sadie Williams; brothers, John Washington, Jr., Robert Washington, Richard Washington, and Franklin Washington; and in-laws, Richard & Julia Medley, Richard Medley, Jr, and Frances Washington, all preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, July 3, 2020 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel in Berryville, VA with Minister Charmissa D. Biscoe officiating. Burial will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, VA.
