Velma was born in Ripley, MS., on August 23, 1927. She was one of eleven children. She attended schools in Ripley, MS. She worked as a Telephone Operator, Sears Catalog Sales Representative, and Dry Cleaners Clerk. Her most important job was being a devoted loving wife and mother. Family was a priority in her life.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Olive Branch, MS. She was baptized as a young mother in Jackson, TN. She lived her faith and brought her husband and four daughters to the Christian faith. We will miss her servant’s heart and loving ways. Her sense of humor brought joy to our lives. She loved gardening, jigsaw puzzles and music.
She is predeceased by her parents, Joe Thomas and Myrtle Davis Street, of Ripley, MS. She is predeceased by her husband, William Alvin Harris, Jr. Velma and William married on July 7, 1947, in Hernando, MS. She is predeceased by her daughter, Marcia Harris Coates.
She leaves her three daughters: Sharon (Sherry) Harris Peacock of Jacksonville, FL., Deborah (Debbie) Harris (Steve) Powell and Tona Harris (Steve) Hunter, both of Bridgetown, Nesbit, MS. She leaves three grandsons: David (Amy) Lacy of Jacksonville, FL., Nick Hunter and Daniel Hunter, both of Memphis, TN. She leaves two great-granddaughters: Katie and Olivia Lacy of Jacksonville, FL. She leaves many step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren. She leaves her sister, Nelta Street Hammerlund of El Cajon, CA., and many loving nephews, nieces and friends
.Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Friday, July 17, 2020, at Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park East, located at 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis, TN., 38133. Reverend Dr. Michael Weeks, of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will officiate. Graveside Service will follow immediately after Funeral Service. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., on Friday, July 17, 2020, at Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park East.
