Son of:
-- John W. Cawman
-- Hester Lee

Husband of:
-- Eleanor Jane "Ellen" Brandriff (m. 27-Feb-1857 in Millville, NJ; presumably divorced)
-- Margaret L. Errickson

Father of (with Ellen):
-- Victoria Hearsh Cawman (Mrs. Wilson James Purvis)
-- Daniel B. Cawman
-- Alexander Cawman
-- Lillian Ann Cawman (Mrs. Nathan Long Creamer)

Father of (with Margaret):
-- Anna May Cawman (Mrs. Rev. John Everett Mettee) (Twin to Lillian May)
-- Lillian May Cawman (twin to Anna May - died young)
-- John W. Cawman
-- Minnie E. Cawman (Mrs. Ralph Gowdy Applegate)

Although his obituary doesn't list his surviving children by his first marriage, and the obituary for first wife Ellen says that she was "widowed by the war," David is found with his parents and two of his earlier children with Ellen (but not Ellen herself) in the 1870 census, before he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. (and later to Neptune Twp., Monmouth Co., North Jersey) with Margaret. Notably, his Civil War pension documents clearly list both wives. It's presumed that he was divorced from Ellen and then married to Margaret somewhere around this time, as around the 1870 timeframe is when he began having children with Margaret.

CARPENTER'S FALL BREAKS HIS NECK

David P. Cawman Dies Soon After Pitching Off Scaffold at New Building

David P. Cawman, a carpenter, while at work on a building in Prospect avenue, West Park, yesterday afternoon, stepped backward off the scaffolding and fell 25 feet to the ground. Cawman's neck was broken by the fall and a gash was cut over his left eye and he died an hour and a half later at his home, 1108 West Mattison avenue.

Bade His Wife Farewell

The unfortunate man, who was picked up in an unconscious condition, revived just before he died and spoke with his wife. At 6 o'clock he breathed his last. Coroner Flock viewed the remains this morning and gave the usual permit.

The deceased leaves three children - John Cawman, a carpenter, Annie, who is instructor in the Whitesville school, and Minnie, who resides with her mother.

Funeral services will be held from his late residence on Monday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Dr. W. R. Wedderspoon of the First Methodist church.
