Sylvia F. Thornton, 81, of Bellville, died Saturday afternoon July 14, 2007 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a long illness.

She was born December 3, 1925 in Heizer Creek, West Virginia to Winford and Gustava (Hedrick) Withrow, and had lived in the Bellville area most of her life.

On June 13, 1947 she married Ivan L. Thornton, and they were blessed with three children. Ivan preceded her in death on January 4, 1995.

Sylvia had worked 18 years as an assembler with Therm-O-Disc, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of Fredericktown Church of Christ, and leaves her family a legacy of strong abiding faith in the Lord. She also instilled in them the importance of a close-knit family through the generations.

"More the merrier" was her philosophy of family gatherings. Sylvia would light-up at the sight of her grandchildren, and when her door opened, beckoning more folks for dinner, she'd quick-like, make another dish to stretch the food.

Sylvia will be remembered for her smile, her big heart, and "her love for her people," along with having "the world's best pancakes!"

She enjoyed being outside in her vegetable and flower gardens, tending to her iris, geraniums and hostas, but she preferred to be inside cheering on her Cleveland Indians & Browns or even Tiger Woods, though she didn't know a thing about golf.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judy & Stan Higgins of Bellville; a son Woodie Thornton of Columbus; grandchildren Chris & Nicole Thornton of Crestline, Jerri Blevins of Fredericktown, Ryan & Amanda Thornton of Ontario, DeAnna Thornton of Jacksonville, FL, Tina & Steve Dion of Mansfield, Christy Holsinger of Mansfield, Heather Higgins of Bellville, Bart and Francesca Higgins of Bellville and Bret & Emily Higgins of Butler; 14 great grandchildren; brothers, sisters and their spouses Woodrow & Thelma Withrow, Carvin Withrow and Linda & Joe Milbee all of Poca, West Virginia, Wanda King and Frank & Lina Withrow all of Mansfield, Shelby & Dr. Ron Wines of Plainfield, IN, Herbert Withrow in Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Gary Thornton on February 27, 2006; and by two sisters Helen Burson and Mary Ellen Borff.
