David Gilfillan, age 60, of Bellevue, Nebraska, died Thursday, July 26, 2007, of injuries received in a boating accident on July 15.

David Bruce Gilfillan was born October 16, 1946 in New York, the youngest son of Florence and Peter Gilfillan. He grew up in Wantaugh on Long Island and graduated from high school there in 1964. An early love for fixing things led him to Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY where he completed a degree in electrical engineering in 1968.

David spent the first part of his career as an engineer in New York, Oklahoma and Nebraska. He found he preferred the open spaces of the Midwest to the bustle of the big city, and decided to stay in Nebraska. His decision was solidified when he met and married Kathy Willmott in Bellevue in 1972. They had three children together: Kristine, Scott and Kimberly.

David spent most of his career working for Engineered Systems, Inc. in Omaha. He loved all kinds of home repair and improvement, and was always planning the next addition or upgrade to the family home. He loved to entertain and spend time with his family and friends.

In recent years, David enjoyed being Grandpa to his five grandchildren. He converted to Catholicism in 2002, and he and Kathy frequently volunteered in their parish. David was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a man for whom actions always spoke louder than words.

Survivors include two daughters: Kristine and husband Tom Lytle of Houston, Texas, and Kimberly and husband Eric Guthmann of Elkhorn, Nebraska; a son, Scott and wife Michelle Gilfillan, of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren: Grace and Margaret Lytle, Stella, Jack and Thomas Guthmann; his mother, Florence Webster, of Papillion, Nebraska; and a brother, Peter and his wife Caroline Gilfillan, of Buffalo, New York.

He was preceded in death by his father, Peter, and his wife, Kathy, on July 15, 2007.

Following Funeral Mass in Bellevue, a scripture service will be held Saturday, August 4, 2007, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in White, South Dakota, with interment in Fairview Cemetery.

Arrangements by Eidsness Funeral Home.
