William Riley Long was the son of
Moses Long and Rhoda'Atchley' Long.
William was born near the old
Providence Church, in Sevier Co.,
Tennessee.
He was a member of the Baptist
Church and had learned the tanning
business from his father, Moses Long
and also he farmed.

William Riley Long was the grandson
of Rev.George W. Long 1 and Nancy
'Elizabeth' Long, also Thomas Atchley
and Lydia 'Richards' Atchley.

On December 5, 1850, William Riley Long
married Susan Caroline 'Scoggin.'
They were the parents of 10 children:
Madison Columbus
Thomas Jefferson
Pantha Octavia
Wm. Independence
Franklin Pierce
John b./d. at 3 mo.
Mary Lou
Eliza Jane
Flora Hattie
Emma Marie

William moved his family during the
year of 1857. This was after his mother,
Rhoda 'Atchley' Long died in McMinn Co.,
Tennessee.
He settled his family near White
River in Independence Co., Arkansas.
The family was living here on a farm
when the rumors of the Civil War began.
When the War started, William Riley Long
joined the Arkansas Volunteers of
the Confederate States Army. He served
under Captain B.B. Owen's Company I,
First Regiment. William survived the war.

His granddaugher, Maud 'Long' Horn
wrote the Atchley, Long, Maples, Griffith,
and Scoggin book and it was first
published in 1936. She collected
the information from each family branch
and it took her several years to compile
the book. Moses Long, s/o Rev.Geo.W.
Long 1 was her great grandfather.

William's son, Thomas Jefferson Long
was Maud's father. William is buried
close to that of his son, Thomas. His
grave is marked with a field rock.
Thomas' grave is marked by a monument
which bears the Masonic emblem. His
grave is near that of his father, William
Riley Long, overlooking the valley. Maud
'Long' Horn was raised in Independence
Co., Arkansas.

My thanks to Chavers for taking the
tombstone picture and placing it on
William's memorial page.
