Benjamin Franklin Palmer was the youngest child of William Henry Palmer and his wife Permelia Higgs. He grew up in Clinton County, Indiana and as an adult, worked as a farmer, a sewing machine salesman and a newspaper editor.

His first wife was Mary Catherine Crose, and their children were Violet, Victor and Vallie (twins), Fred, John, and Daisy (who died in infancy.) Mary died in Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana on 28 May 1886.

On 11 Sep 1887 B.F. married Julia Ann Frazier Holliday, who had previously been married to Joseph Gaskill Holliday. Julia had five sons with her first husband - Charles and Clyde (who both died in 1877) and Karl, Ross, and Ernest.

B.F. and Julia had three children, Jerry (who died as a newborn) and daughter June and son Frank.

He moved to Illinois in about 1891. In 1892, his wife Julia and their two young children, June and Frank, returned to Indiana to care for Julia's mother, who had fallen and broken her leg. The family was still separated, B.F. and the older ones farming in Illinois, and Julia and the two younger ones in Indiana, when B.F. died in 1898.
